What's New at Salem Home Inc.

From the desk of Marilyn Nelson, RN.

Director of Resident Care Services

Some of you have heard the new buzz surrounding Relationship Centered Care . The Board of Directors of Salem Home has recently changed the Mission Statement to:

Our Commitment… To Provide Christ-centered care, embracing the values of Compassion, Dignity, Excellence and Faith.”

In order for us to accomplish this Mission Statement, we must seriously look at how we deliver care.

Maple Unit is experiencing several changes to support a Relationship Centered approach to resident care.  Changes have included the re-organization of resident population and in-service.  Some of our younger Salem Home Residents are being moved to Maple Court.

There are many opportunities to participate in discussions and planning for a different deliver of care to SH residents.  Come to Month in Review to hear about what is happening.  Watch the bulletin boards for workshops from Peter Wiebe.  Maple care providers will have the first opportunity to attend these workshops, then Cottonwood and Evergreen care providers.

Remember, “We are working in the resident’s home, they do not live at our work place”.

STRATEGIC PLAN 2008 AND BEYOND

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The compilation of the corporate Strategic Plan for Salem Home Inc. was completed internally as per Governing Board’s decision.  The Governing Board directed the Executive Committee to become the working committee for the plan.

Input for the overall strategic plan was collected from Board members, senior administration, managers, front line employees, Salem Home Support Association and Salem Home Nurses Association Executives, and church leadership.  This broad spectrum of consultation is invaluable in determining the future direction of the organization.

Through the process, changes have been made to ensure the organization is reflective of the 21st century and prepared for what is anticipated to happen in the future.  The current Strategic Plan is designed as a long-term plan (five to ten years) with the intentions of fine-tuning what already exists in the organization, as well as ensuring the organization remains responsive to its realities.

Mission

Our Commitment. . . .

To provide Christ-centred care embracing the values of compassion, dignity, excellence and faith.

Vision

Salem Home will be recognized as an innovative leader in the delivery of long-term care services.

Corporate Values

Compassion              Dignity            Excellence                 Faith

Each value was defined by employees as they relate to their roles in providing care to the residents.

SWOT Analysis

The Working Committee completed a SWOT analysis.  Many of the Challenges were also recognized as opportunities for the organization to pursue.  Some significant challenges, which the Strategic Plan recognizes, include:

  • Recruitment and retention of employees due to increased competition of business opportunities in the community and surrounding area.
  • Reduced number of potential employees
  • Expectations of employees
  • Decreased levels of volunteerism.
  • Increased acuity of care in residents admitted to the facility
  • Increased expectations of residents who have more disposable income and have traveled extensively
  • Increased expectations of families with less tolerance for mistakes and excuses

Perspectives and Goals

The Working Committee identified four areas of focus.  While more formal in the documentation, the following represent the core of each perspective:

  1. Learning and Growth
    • Maximize Employee Capabilities
    • Information Systems
    • Motivation and Alignment with Corporate Direction
  1. Relationships
    • Care in Salem Home Inc
    • Care in the Community
    • Care in the Church
    • External Care Providers and Advocacy Groups
    • Winkler Business Community
  2. Business Processes to Meet Mandate
    • Provide Relationship Centered Care
    • Maintain Safety Culture for Residents and Employees/ Minimizing Risk
    • Industry Standards and Legislation Compliance
    • Maintain the Integrity of Salem Home’s Assets
  3. Financial Mandates
    • Effective Asset Utilization
    • Productivity Improvements

Measuring Success

The Governing Board will determine the threshold of success, using already established indicators.

CORPORATE VALUES

As a component of the Governing Board’s Strategic Plan, four core values were established for the corporation.  As part of the initiative to engage the employees in the planning process, the Governing Board requested that employees define the values as they experience them in the context of Salem Home.

It is important to define values, but it is equally important to define the actions and behaviors that give life to the values.  The following definitions of both have been defined by the employees.

Compassion

1.                  Providing residents and employees with a sense of belonging.

2.                  Taking time to understand and meet the resident and employee’s needs

3.                  Supporting the emotional, spiritual, and physical well-being of the residents and employees.

4.                  Respecting the residents and employees regardless of cultural heritage.

Dignity

1.                  Providing person centred care, believing that each resident and employee is a unique expression of God’s creative genius.

2.                  Honoring the right of privacy of residents, employees, and the organization.

3.                  Practicing the Golden Rule with those we care for, work with, and meet.

Excellence

1.                  Continually working together to improve how we provide care and services.

2.                  Insuring care and service excellence using evidence-based and promising practices.

3.                  Adhering to a high standard of moral conduct, and dealing with people honestly.

4.                  Assuring results and accountability for wise and cost effective use of resources.

5.                  Promoting learning through training and development of employees.

Faith

1.                  Developing and maintaining trusting relationships as an expression of our faith to create community.

2.                  Our faith provides the framework which guides our decision making.

3.                  Nurturing and supporting residents and employees to live the Fruits of the Spirit.

4.                  Fostering an environment which encourages and supports the spiritual growth of residents and employees.

Core Set of Behaviors

How we respond to those around us and to situations we experience is fundamental to living out the core values of the place where we work.

Each employee brings to their work their own set of values, beliefs and cultural biases, and even though we may not agree with them, we must treat each other with respect.

Behaviors that reflect Salem Home’s values are encompassed in the Golden Rule “Do unto others, as you would have them do unto you”.  Matthew 7:12.  This includes

  • Accepting one another
  • Believing in one another
  • Respecting one another
  • Encourage and compliment staff when they have done something exceptional. (caught doing a good thing).
  • Continuously challenging ourselves and others to become more aware of how we respond to people and situations around us.
  • Trusting each other
  • Refraining from talking about each other
  • Refraining from judging each other.
  • Refraining from talking about the residents at the break table.
  • Do what you say you will do, say what you mean, and mean what you say, do what you said you were going to do.
  • Meaningful interaction with residents – servant hood.
  • Creating joy for the resident
  • Take the time to pray with the residents- Have a copy of the “Lord’s Prayer” available to read to resident.
  • Exercise compassion with one another.
  • Leaving yourself open to possibilities
